Artifact Story

Discovered at Anyang in 1939, the original Hou Mu Wu Ding is a monumental ritual bronze from the late Shang dynasty. Its rectangular body stands on four columnar legs and is framed by cast animal-mask and related motifs. An inscription inside the vessel is read by the National Museum of China as Hou Mu Wu, a temple designation associated with the mother of a Shang king.
