Artifact Story

Discovered in Ningxiang, Hunan, in 1938, the original square bronze zun dates to the late Shang dynasty. Four curled-horn rams project from its corners, while cast dragons, birds and geometric patterns extend across the shoulders, body and foot. Linear incision, relief and fully modeled animal forms are brought together within a single ritual wine vessel.
